CHAPTER 25
Catania, unknown building basement
“They want to hurt us … hurt you,” Joshua said softly.
Aimee and Joshua huddled in a dark basement somewhere on a backstreet in the empty city. Other people were with them, pushed into corners and alcoves, murmuring or whimpering softly. There was also a group of four sullen-looking young men. These men weren’t fearful, more hungry and calculating than anything else. They whispered among themselves, urgent and forcefully, as if arguing over something. Now and then one or another would throw a glance at some of the younger women in the basement, and their eyes constantly moved to Aimee and Joshua.
Aimee exhaled and drew Joshua in close to her. “Don’t worry, we’ll be fine.”
“Sure we will,” Joshua agreed, but with little conviction.
The smoke had grown thicker outside, and then from within the smoke came the screams, and then came the things. Joshua had warned Aimee to get them off the street as there was danger hiding within the greasy-hot clouds. She had heeded him immediately, as he was never wrong about these things. Joshua saw with more than just his eyes – the boy was either benefitting from or cursed with some of Alex’s abilities. Plus he had a few of his own that were unique – he could sense things hidden to others, or that hadn’t even occurred yet. If Joshua said there was danger coming, then that meant you got the hell out of there.
Aimee had followed another group fleeing into the basement of an old building. But before the door had been slammed shut, the young men had pushed in. The dynamics of the room had changed immediately. Now, there seemed to be danger within as well as without.
“I wish Dad was here,” Joshua said softly as he watched the men. “Or Tor.”
Aimee hugged him. “I’m here.”
He turned to look briefly at her, and he nodded. She knew exactly what was going on his head – he liked that Aimee was there, but as a physical force, she was well down the ranks. Joshua must have known what that meant – it was him that might be called upon to protect her.

Joshua continued to watch the men, and wondered why it was that at the times when people were most scared and most vulnerable, instead of banding together as one, some would try to take advantage of the situation. It was like some people wanted to separate everyone into different species – the wolves and the sheep.
Anger began to burn in his stomach. He tried again to reach out to his father or to Torben, but he couldn’t find them or even see them. He and his mother were alone.
Joshua wanted to be strong, and wondered what his father would do. He remembered Alex telling him a little of what he did for a job: I protect those who need protection, he had said. And sometimes I need to use force against force. Joshua turned to Aimee.
“I can hurt them,” he whispered.
